Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) researchers are pioneering treatments to address the root cause of this condition. By focusing on hair cell regeneration, they aim to replace prosthetic devices with biological therapies. HSCI has identified stem cells capable of becoming hair cells and the molecules that trigger this transformation. Techniques to grow hair cells in the lab and implant them into the ear are being developed. Additionally, stem cells are being used to screen for drugs that could stimulate hair cell regeneration. Experiments show promising results, with drugs partially restoring hearing in deaf rats. Further research aims to optimize drug combinations and delivery methods. HSCI scientists have also successfully transformed stem cells into brain cells, which, when transplanted into deaf animals, helped restore hearing. This breakthrough holds potential for personalized treatments using a patient’s own stem cells. Future studies will focus on enhancing the effectiveness of this procedure and identifying optimal surgical approaches for cell transplantation.
